Notes from Homeschool Parents

Homeschool Greetings,

I vividly remember the college semester when I took my first human anatomy and physiology class. While I've had an interest in the human body since I was eleven or twelve years-old, it was during this college semester that I first began to understand the incredible complexity of the human body. I actually remember devouring the chapters in my anatomy and physiology textbook, amazed at what I was reading.

Today, I enjoy seeing that "light" come on in the minds of my homeschool and university students. Just a few weeks ago, the mother of one of my homeschool anatomy and physiology students told me:

"John (not his real name) didn't want to take this class - he had no interest in studying the body. After three weeks in your class he's talking about the possibility of a career in medicine or some field related to the body. He loves your class, can't wait for it every week, and always comes away with excitement, anxious to tell us about what he's learned."

The Lord has given me a passion for teaching students about the human body and how this complex creation of His testifies to His glory. For example, I love teaching about the pancreas, the microscopic precision with which it operates, and how many small steps have to go just right every second of every day just for us to live.. not to mention the kidneys, heart, brain, liver, and a "simple" movement of the finger, driven by the "simple" contraction of a muscle.

My class is geared toward college-bound students but is appropriate for all high school age students who are interested in the human body. This "Human Anatomy and Physiology" is a class that few high school age students have access to at this level. You can access these class from anywhere in the U.S. - or for that matter, anywhere in the world. :)

A student going into a science-related college major (pre-med, exercise science, biology, chemistry, dentistry, athletic training, nutrition, health promotion, nursing, physical therapy, physician's assistant, occupational therapy, etc.) has a tremendous advantage if they've had this class during "high school". Also, it's been my experience that these classes often spark an interest in students that was previously undiscovered.

We're also offering a one week residential Anatomy and Physiology Camp in Boone, NC on the campus of Appalachian State University (click here for map) - details below.

"Human Anatomy and Physiology"
Online Class
Appropriate for 8th – 12th graders – Prerequisite: Biology Preferred

Topics Covered
: bones, muscles, joints, integumentary system, nervous system, endocrine system, the senses, blood, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, immune system, respiratory system, nutrition, urinary system, digestive system, reproductive system, genetics and pregnancy.

A student going into a science-related college major (pre-med, exercise science, biology, chemistry, dentistry, athletic training, nutrition, health promotion, nursing, physical therapy, physician's assistant, occupational therapy, etc.) has a tremendous advantage if they've had this class prior to beginning college. Also, it's been my experience that this often sparks an interest in students that was previously undiscovered.

Class Size: Limited and on a first-come-first-served basis. We can reserve a spot in the class for your student when we receive your registration tuition payment (full or partial)

Class Schedule: Late August, 2008 through early May, 2009

Teacher: The class is taught by homeschool Dad, Greg Landry. Greg has a masters degree in Physiology from Louisiana State University (LSU). He teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab to pre-professional students (pre-med, biology, chemistry, exercise science, pre-physical therapy, pre-dentistry, etc.) at Appalachian State University and is director of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab. Greg has taught homeschool science classes for the past ten years. He has a unique ability to pull out the most important information and present it in a way that's interesting and easy to understand.

Greg and his wife, Nancy, have homeschooled their daughters for the past twelve years. Rachel is a freshman at a Christian College in Tennessee on academic and athletic (swimming) scholarships. Rebecca, "the fish", is homeschooling tenth grade.

Here's How it Works..

Students will "attend" a 60 - 90 minute "class" weekly online (either live or via a recording if they can't attend at the "live" time). "Live" day and time will vary week-to-week to assure that the greatest number of students can attend "live" if they'd like to.

These are a combination of lab / lecture / interaction. They will be able to hear me talking online and will be able to ask questions too. They'll also be able to see live still graphics, etc. online. All of this with no special equipment or software. The student will simply go to the class website for the class. We'll even do "virtual dissections" with graphics and some video - cool stuff! :)

We'll do a variety of unique labs that bring "anatomy and physiology" to life for students - they're also lots of fun!

I am also available for questions, etc. during the week via email and telephone. Students will have weekly reading assignments along with questions to answer, lab reports, and work in an anatomy and physiology "color book".

Tuition covers weekly class / lab time online, one-on-one time by phone or email for questions, etc., the text book / lab book, lab kit, "coloring book", supplemental materials, etc. Everything is covered by tuition. there are no additional costs.

Students will be mailed a "lab kit" so they can do the labs with my direction:

- To better understand the blood and blood types, we'll determine each students blood type.
- To help understand how the pancreas works, we'll look at blood glucose levels before and after eating ice cream.
- We'll test each student's cholesterol level as part of our study of the liver and the affect of nutrition and activity on blood cholesterol level.
- We'll "virtually dissect" a variety of cow and sheep organs (similar to human): eye, brain, kidney, pancreas, lung, heart, trachea, stomach, pregnant uterus, muscle, and bladder.
- We'll do interesting reflex experiments to help understand the nervous system.
- We'll do vision experiments to better understand the eyes.
- To better understand genetics and heredity, we do experiments using genetic traits.
- To help understand the respiratory system, we'll do pulmonary (lung) function tests on each student.
- To help understand bioenergetics, we'll anaerobic power tests.
- To help in understanding the urinary system, we'll do a ten parameter urinalysis on each student.
- And more.

Student Requirements: Students will be required to "attend" class regularly (live time or recorded sessions online), take notes, complete weekly assignments, participate in class "discussions", participate in labs, prepare lab reports, take tests, etc.

Materials are also included in tuition fee:  Extensive "lab kit", Anatomy and Physiology textbook, supplemental lab manual, Anatomy and Physiology "coloring" book, other supplemental materials.

Tuition Fee (also includes over $150 in materials): $880 for the school year (late August, 2008 through early May, 2009). Discount if you register by May 13, 2008.

Tuition covers weekly live class / lab time online, one-on-one time by phone or email for questions, etc., the text book / lab book, lab kit, "coloring book", supplemental materials, etc. Everything is covered by tuition. there are no additional costs.

One of Greg's Local Homeschool Science Classes

"My children have taken science classes from Greg Landry for the past 4 years. Greg is a gifted teacher with a unique ability to challenge his students while also increasing their confidence."

"He is rigorous in the classic sense, he values writing skills, cultivates time management and organizational habits, and helps each student develop and adhere to long range plans. While his students are learning these life skills, they are also becoming scientists."

"I expect that the teaching in Greg's upper level science classes is on par with university level courses. His students thrive in this environment and learn the value of hard work. As a homeschooler who struggled with biology and chemistry as a student, Greg's classes provide my children with an opportunity to learn about these subjects from an enthusiastic and well informed teacher."

Cinda Payne-Smith
Boone, NC

__________

"Greg Landry is a valuable member of our homeschool community. He has the initiative and organizational skills to get things done and do them well. A partial list of homeschool activities he initiated includes homeschool olympics, baseball, swimming, and family fun nights. He also oversees the HCCHS (High Country Christian Home Schoolers) web site and email list as a member of the HCCHS board."

"In the past several years Greg has taught a variety of courses that are popular with our families. The courses are well-organized and set high expectations for students. Overall, Greg's leadership has created opportunities for families in our group that otherwise would not be available."

"The best recommendation I could give for Greg Landry as a teacher would be to refer to his work as a Christian husband and father. He and his wife, Nancy, manage an orderly, hospitable home, and the fruit of their labors is evident in the lives of their two daughters, both steadily growing to be Godly young women as well as capable and conscientious students."

"A Christan husband and father well educated in the sciences, he truly cares about his students and the learning task. He not only challenges his students academically, he also encourages them to pursue all knowledge to the glory of God. His science classes have been a God-sent gift to our family!"

Renee Fuller

"Greg, I want to let you know how much we appreciate the session on academic excellence you did last week. Both Maggie and Mason were encouraged and motivated. Thank you for the obvious time and effort you put into making it a meaningful and practical guide."

"Reading over their notes and your outline made me recommit to doing my work as a wife, mother, and teacher as an act of service to the Lord. What a blessing it is to have fellow homeschoolers like your family to be such support and encouragement to us! Thank you."

Blessings to you,

"Science is not my strength as a homeschool mom...something that I was never excited when I was in school. I have been so thankful for my son and daughter to have had the opportunity to study science with Greg Landry. He is excited and knowledgeable about what he teaches and expands learning beyond just the textbook."

"My children have been on fun and relevant field trips and taken part in awesome experiments and other hands-on activities...and all from a godly teacher and father who helps them understand the wonder of God's creation in every aspect of what they are learning. My children have been blessed by being in his classes."

Merrill and Beth Littlejohn

__________

"Greg Landry taught my son Anatomy and Physiology. He is an excellent teacher. He sees his students as individuals. He sets a standard and calls them out to that place. I think this is very important for young adults. He knows his subject and never limits himself to a textbook. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Greg for any class he offered."

Dr and Mrs Matt Brown
Boone, NC

__________

"My daughter, Kristyn, has taken at least three different science classes with Greg Landry and she has not only learned a tremendous amount about the subject area, but she has also learned it from a Christain perspective. As a parent, I appreciate his thorough, challenging pace as well as his easy going nature. I highly recommend him as a teacher."

Susan Bacot
Boone, NC

__________

"Greg Landry has been an answer to prayer for our family. As a home schooling mom of three, I realized that I didn't have the knowledge or time to teach my oldest son the high school level science classes he needed for college. Mr. Landry's classes filled this void and more!"

"Before taking Biology, my son didn't know how to study - a major concern of mine. In a very short time I noticed that he was developing a self-discipline and a love of learning that I had not seen before. Because of Greg Landry's standard of excellence and Christian values, I believe that my son will be well prepared for college."

Karen Perry
Newland, NC

__________

"Greg Landry is an outstanding instructor. He has worked with my daughter for the last year and a half. He taught her Physical Science last year and this year, Biology. Even though my daughter is one of the youngest in the class, he has patiently worked along side of her. He challenges her to develop good study habits, participate in class, and reach her potential."

"Greg includes many fun activities in class as well. During the first year with Greg, my daughter was among the students categorized as "most improved" during the course of the year. I believe this is due to Greg's excellent instruction and consistent encouragement. I highly recommend Greg Landry as a Christ-centered Science Teacher."

"We love you Greg!"
